Joe Childers SD 18 & the NRA
I am an NRA member and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. This week, I sat down and read the November issue of the NRA magazine, America's First Freedom. I was shocked to see that my friend, Joe Childers, received an F!
Joe is the GOP candidate in Senate District 18, Mary Lunby's old seat. His opponent Swati Dandekar received a C. Now a C is not an endorsement by any means but an F??? I know Joe and he is a conservative, I tried to recall whether he had ever said anything that would lead me to believe that he was no 100% for gun rights. I could not think of a thing.
I gave Joe a call and asked him about it. He said that he was frustrated. Apparently because he had asked for some more information on his survey they viewed his questions as negative responses. As a challenger without a voting record, they simply assigned him a grade of F.
THE NRA IS WRONG. Joe Childers is a strong pro-gun candidate. He is exactly the kind of person we need in the Iowa Senate. The NRA doesn't know Joe Childers — I do — he gets an A+ on gun rights in my book.
From what I have been hearing this is happening all over Iowa. The same thing has happened to Jane Jech and Annette Sweeney.

David,
Before you go around bashing the NRA, why don't you ask your friend for a copy of the survey and answers your friend Joe sent in to the NRA.
The NRA isn't going to give someone an F just because they don't have a voting record, and to say so is ridiculous. Joe must have given them reason to be worried.

NRA Fan,
Thanks for the comments. I will ask Joe for a copy of his survey response. I think the issue is that he sent back a survey with some questions, expecting a response from the NRA. Instead they took his request for more info as a no vote.
As for Joe, he supports 'shall issue' carry. To me this is a 'litmus test' issue in Iowa. Joe comes down on the right side of this and all other 2nd Amendment issues that I know of.

I do have a question for the NRA Fan ... Why is it that the NRA endorsed Kevin McCarthy over Larry Disney in District 67? Disney is 100% pro-gun and has a voteing record to prove it along with a 100% survey responce. McCarthy deliberatly blocks pro-gun legislation from reaching the floor in the Iowa House yet he gets the nod? On what planet does this make sense.
Gun issues are my one drop-dead, no compromis, no excepions issue. However, Im very disapointed by the NRAs lack of courrage in the 2008 elections.

I'm disappointed the NRA hasn't been putting out commercials blasting these blatantly false commercials the Obama campaign has been running saying that he'd protect gun rights.
Hello?? Does the NRA remember the "clinging to our guns and religion" line???

Mike,
They have been running ads where they can. Unfortunately they do not have the kind of money that Obama has.
That is why it is up to those of us that have the opportunity to counter those lies.
