Jim Leach, Don Palmer and Freak of the Week

Krusty has a post about former 2nd District Republican Congressman Jim Leach, campaigning for Obama in Iowa. Apparently Leach is speaking under the banner of Republicans for Obama. As Krusty says, of Leach:

Outside of Davenport and Iowa City Leach doesn’t have much influence  ... In fact many Republicans in Iowa City and the Quad Cities are pissed off at him ...

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reported on a Republicans for Obama Meeting in Cedar Rapids. The paper put the crowd at about a dozen Republicans and more Democrats.

According to the Gazette, longtime Linn County Republican activist, Don Palmer, introduced Leach. Palmer ran unsuccessful campaigns for Iowa House in 2004 and 2006. The Gazette reports:

Palmer ... cautioned against assuming all the Republicans in the room were backing Obama.

"They might be here out of respect for Jim Leach," Palmer said.

I am surprised that there are even a dozen second district Republicans who still have respect for Jim Leach.

Last week, my friends at In Flyover Country read this blog and made Clayton County GOP Chair Gwen Eilers their Freak of the Week for supporting a write-in campaign against our Republican Senate nominee, Christopher Reed.  I would suggest that this week they should consider Don Palmer of Linn County for Freak of the Week.

I still respect Jim Leach. Although I strongly disagree with him on this matter, he is a man of impeccable honor and one of the last true statesmen to serve in Washington.
